33 Years of Experience

Markt & Company Construction has been in business for over 33 years, and we specialize in remodeling for accessibility. We got started in this specialization when a family member was in a car accident and we saw first-hand how many activities of daily life became more difficult. A few minor (or major, depending on the house) modifications can make a world of difference to someone who is newly disabled.

We think of aging-in-place as something for every customer to consider, no matter their age. Even young people can find themselves diabled after an accident or illness. Also, the birth of a disabled child or caring for a family member can make these issues important. When planning a remodel, it makes sense to put thought into how you can stay in your new home no matter what happens. If simple modifications are in place before a disability occurs, the transition back to daily life will be that much easier.

One of our owners co-founded a non-profit organization called ReFIT (Remodeling for Independence Together) to provide home modifications to disabled, low income homeowners in the Portland, Oregon area, allowing them to remain living in their homes instead of having to relocate.

Markt & Company recently won an award through the Oregon Remodeler's Association for outstanding achievement in Universal Design for a large-scale home renovation including an elevator. We like to emphasize that remodeling for aging-in-place can be done with style; It's not about making your home look or feel like a hospital - it's about small things that you may not even notice until you really need them.

Pictures of our award winning and other projects, as well as information about our company are available on our website at www.marktandcompany.com. We also have a blog at www.marktandcompanyblog.com, or we can be reached by telephone at (503) 657-5557.

The Next Best Thing (2 Being There)

July 13th, 2009
Norwalk, CT

Davco Custom Electronic Solutions introduces… The Next Best Thing.

Everyone is always looking for something new, something great…The Next Best Thing!

Busy families today have to juggle taking care of family (children and parents) with work and household responsibilities. It’s a real challenge to keep track of everyone and everything. Davco has put together The Next Best Thing: a group of products that will revolutionize the way family members stay close to one another.

The Next Best Thing is a modular telepresence system. Telepresence refers to a set of technologies which allow a person to feel as if they were present, to give the appearance that they were present, or to have an effect at a location other than their true location. Using your existing high-speed internet connection and a series of small wireless sensors installed in and around the home, you can monitor motion, doors, windows, temperature, and pressure. In addition to it’s monitoring capabilities, this system can provide complete automation such as opening automatic doors and windows or drawing shades, energy saving lighting and appliance control, simple one touch TV and media system control, as well as provide thousands of hours of digital music and movies to every room in your house.

How would you like to “check in” on the residence at any given time? With The Next Best Thing this is always possible. All you need is an internet connection or web-enabled smart phone and our remote service and you can see any monitored device in the home. These devices can be used to detect events like movement of a person from one room to another or if windows or doors have been opened. Our conditional logic programming allows for events to be monitored based on circumstances, which is something a security system just can’t provide.

In the home of an elderly parent, this systems allows adult children or caregivers to keep tabs on thise who can’t afford to or don’t want to go to an assisted living facility. Think of the possibilities: now you can know if your elderly mother has gotten out of bed, taken her medicine, opened the refrigerator, or left the stove on. You can monitor whether the meal service or the visiting nurse stopped by or if your Dad went out for his daily walk. The Next Best Thing provides this technology for the elderly so they can stay in their homes as long as possible. Custom audio reminders can now be played throughout the residence for medication times, exercise, Dr. Appointments or pets. If wandering is a concern, a simple program can be employed to monitor both bed and door status at certain times of the day. Know if the car left the garage or if an unusual amount of time has elapsed in the last bathroom visit.

Add lighting control and cameras to these packages and you, not an operator in Fargo, are now in control of your loved ones home. While we do not call the Fire Department, Police, of Medics, we do provide you, the one who should make these important decisions, with the information to do so. At that point a simple phone call should be all it takes to either relive your worry or place the next call for help. These are just a small sample of the thousands of events that can be monitored right from your cell phone or email with custom text messages. With your customized system, these events can even trigger a camera to record the events taking place. The possibilities are endless! No matter where you live, you can stay close to your parents or loved ones. It's Like The next best Thing 2 Being There!

Systems start as low as $2995.00* installed in the NY,CT and NJ Tri State Area and include the first year of web access for FREE!** Call 203-838-5887, Email, info@2beingthere.com today for a free consultation to find out what The Next Best Thing can do for you or visit The Next Best Thing @ www.2beingthere.com for more information and packages.

Building homes that are prepared for technology changes

Homepath Products LLCis an independent, new business offering a revolutionary modification to home design and construction. While the product, eXapath in-wall cable pathways, is not designed specifically for "aging in place" it certainly has relevance as it provides a simple and practical means to modify the home for technology changes with time. The product itself allows for economical addition and upgrading of the low voltage cables used to support data networks, CATV, media rooms, home theater, security and automation.

If you plan to build a home for "aging in place" please consider using these products as a hedge against technology changes. Consult with your architect or builder as these pathways need to be installed before the gypsum board is in place.

For those concerned about keeping energy usage to a minimum, the eXapath system is optimized for use with today's most advanced open cell expanding sprayfoam insulation products. It eliminates the problem of having to fish wires through semi-rigid foam by establishing a pre-planned pathway for cabling. Media outlets can be installed before or after sheetrock is installed further improving te flexibility enjoyed by homeowners.

We design and produce our products in Connecticut and encourage you to call or email with questions.

Clear the CLutter Professional Organizers assist Seniors

Seniors have way too much STUFF! At this stage of their lives less is more. I assist the elderly and their families sort through years worth of memorbelia, papers, collectables, etc. and evaluate what is most needed for them today. Clutter causes all kinds of hazzards, such as tripping, confusion, visual and mental clutter. The less they have the less they have to dust, and maintain. I organize everything to have a specific home, so they can find what their looking for without frustration. We also pack and unpack should the need to downsize arise.

Aging in Place

As a certified Senior Move Manager and Age in Place Planner, I focus on the Age in Place Planning as a way to keep those in transition healthy while they await community opening. So many times our elder adults are injured at home and are unable to make the transition and end up in the hospital or a rehabilitation facility.

Age in Place Planning is imperative - and works hand-in-hand with Universal Design. It's my goal to work with local builders to construct homes that people of all ages can live in safely as long as possible. My own Grandmother fell three times in her hallway - which could have been avoided if the grate she tripped over had been moved - and is now unable to stay at the home my grandfather built her over 70 years ago.

Sometimes the physical changes are costly, sometimes not. But relocating alone can cost more than the necessary changes. Relocation Stress Syndrome claims lives as well. We may not want to think of these things until we are "older" or until we "have" to, but for those that are proactive, living at home is much more feasible.

Helping seniors stay independent, in control, in their home.

Moving Solutions at Home (www.movingsolutions.com) helps older adults remain in their homes by decluttering, repurposing spaces and furniture and generally dealing with all the "stuff" that accumulaqtes and often becomes a hasard in homes as people age. Our Aging in PLace experts have Masters degree level training in vocational rehab, do home safety assessments and work with a network of colleagues to address all needs we may find. The bottom line, perhaps, is convincing clients that our services are necessary. Understanding how to approach clients in a step by step fashion to earn their trust is our specialty.

The Silver Surfers Club

Aloha,

We're organizing The Silver Surfers Club-initially on Maui to help busy baby boomer caregivers and their care recipients in this season of life.

Our three-part offering will include: Personal concierge services, Home Safety audits and remodeling assistance, and in-home demonstrations of a "bundle" of AIPT products.

Our mission is to help babyboomers and their loved ones to live at home safely, independently, and comfortably while benefiting from the many benefits that 21st century AIPT has to offer.

Seniors want to be better "connected" with family, friends, and their healthcare providers. All of these are neccesary for their physical, mental, and spiritual well being; and all of these requirements can be provided for with proper education, planning, and use of AIPT.

We invited anyone who'd like to participate in this venture to contact us.

If we're successful on Maui, we'll attempt to "package" our business model and replicate with local partners elsewhere.

A lead feature of our offering will be our Silver Surfers Club SEAL OF APPROVAL which will only be granted to vendors/products/local service providers whose products/services will undergo a formal evaluation.

Key evaluation criteria will include but not be limited to: Affordability, reliability, useability, ease of installation and learning, after-sale service, and -when appropriate-interoperability.

We believe that the age wave is going to overwhelm most local communities.
Most baby boomer caregivers and seniors will not be able to afford ALFs and
nursing homes-even if beds and healthcare workers are available.

A holistic approach utilising universal design principles, AIPT, and better organized community support will have to be implemented do deal with the acute social pain and caregiver stress that is already being felt across the nation.

The Silver Surfers Club will attempt to model and nurture-albeit on a small test basis-this kind of holistic approach.

We welcome new product ideas, advisors, comments-and inquiries.

Hopefully our experience will be useful to the AIPT space at large.

Builder focusing on Seniors

I am a builder in the Roanoke, VA area. I have been marketing my services to senior citizens who wish to remain in their own homes. I feel like I'm starting a new business.  Construction has dropped off precipitously and I believe that building new homes using Universal design features and home modifications to improve accessibility is a growing market with a lot of potential. Any ideas or suggestions in building this market would be appreciated.

Helping Seniors Know Their Options

After spending ten years working with seniors and their families as a Director of Admissions and Marketing for Indianapolis area assisted living and nursing homes I wanted to help empower seniors and their families to make informed choices. I developed a website that is a one stop resource for everything related to eldercare, Indianapolis area community resources and a comprehensive provider directory called www.agingavenues.com. When a senior prefers to age in place it takes work to coordinate all the services they need and we help them do that with our Helping Hands Senior Assessment and Referral Program. Most don't realize that it is often more expensive to remain in their home than to go to a nursing home or assisted living. We also help them figure out what community resources are available to them and coordinate that with paid care. We even assist them with the Veteran's Aid and Attendance benefit to help pay for care. For more information contact us at info@agingavenues.com or 317-731-3315.

My 35 years of experience as

My 35 years of experience as a registered nurse and a caregiver has prompted me to start an online business. My goal is to assist boomers and seniors to remain in their home through education and guidance to maneuver the medical delivery system.

It is also a goal to help those that want to age in place overcome the obstacles they face by making them aware of the technologies and adaptive changes that will assist them to be successful to remain in the home.

New Service for Senior Homeowners

I am a retired engineer living in the Long Island, New York
area. I have helped several friends and relatives evaluate
quotes and proposals for projects that they required. I would like to start a service for senior homeowners to help them choose a reliable contractor for work they would like performed. My years of experience would help in evaluating the various aspects of the contractor written proposals.
Including cost, schedule and work to be performed. My fee for this service would be dependent upon the the senior's ability to pay. In all cases, I would select vendors and contractors without bias or link to any companies or individuals. Please provide feedback if anyone deems this as a worthy service. LIS1959@aol.com

Home Modifications Since 2002

Our company was incorporated in 2002 and since that time has served to offer both home modification services and the retail sale of distributed products. Some observations based on our experience so far:

-This is not a proactive market. End users make decisions to renovate or to modify their homes as a consequence of injury or catastrophic event, often at the last minute. (Human nature I guess)That being said, once an event occurs, the Independent Living Specialist who oversees the modification and advises the client is considered a valuable member of the client care team (very important)

-The general public is not familiar with terms of reference for this market i.e Barrier Free / Universal Design / Home Modifications etc and consequently have a hard time finding resources to support their needs.

-Bathrooms are public enemy #1! We considered offering a home accessibility assessment service (like a home inspection) but quickly realized that multiple page reports identifying problems can be written for almost every single home. So many so that it would be unrealistic to expect the homeowner to comply and invest in the work that needs to be done. But if the homeowner can't use the bathroom, they can't live at home. Our company focus has therefore shifted to bathroom safety.

I feel that there is a tremendous upside to this market that's still about 5 years off. In Canada at least, there is a slow push to move health care to the home and community. This means more acute patients living at home, the need for hospitals beds, pumps and monitoring equipment to fit in the home (home modifications)and of course a slew of broadband and wireless monitoring technologies.
