What makes Voice First special for older adults? This blog has discussed the emergence of Voice First technology -- speech-enabled interactions with technology -- on multiple occasions. But this occasion is different -- it marks the publication of a research effort and resulting report linked here called The Future of Voice First Technology and Older Adults 2018. Reliability?
Laurie, I love your blog and frequently share it with friends and colleague. You latest missive brings me to comment as I am increasing become very concerned about the reliability of these Voice First systems.
First, I work for Maine CITE, Maine’s Assistive Technology Act program. We advocate for the effective use of technology to assist people with disabilities or all ages, as well as seniors trying to stay in their homes. I am the “tech guy” for Maine CITE and have a background (and a side business) in web design and accessibility.
Over the past year, I have been slowly acquiring various Voice First devices, and gadgets to work with them, in my own living space. Just before the holidays, I added two iHome “smart plugs” to the mix and decided to use them to control a table lamp and humidifier. The process was not without major challenges and it took over two hours (which included a lengthy call to iHome customer service – with wait time) before I was able to get things to work. The “guy on the phone” was basically useless and knew less about the smart home technology than I did.
In the 2+ months since the plugs were installed there have been a least three times when Alexa could not find the plug and a day or so later a mea culpa e-mail arrived from iHome telling me they had a major problem with their “cloud.” Add to this dozens of times when Alexa says the devices are not responding even though they have already turned on or off the device.
I wish iHome’s technology was the only culprit. I can report all the smart home systems in my home, include Amazon Echo devices themselves, have failed to work correctly from time to time.
Bluetooth connectivity appears to be a source of many of the problems, but wifi, and network systems also have occurred on a regular basis. Often breakdowns occur when software or firmware for the device is required and the owner needs to perform some action within the app on the smart device that controls the hardware. It often does not perform the updates automatically.
I am guessing the reliability of these systems is somewhere between 60-75% meaning they are NOT reliable. This would be fine if the products were being used by someone (like me) who just wants the latest whizz-bang device in their home. But if you are a person with a disability or a senior, this is simply not acceptable.
I have discussed this with several OTs and ATPs who work in the field and they report similar observations.
